Art In The Redwoods
I love maps, especially maps that show places that are accessible by car, and I especially love to look at remote towns on the coastline from Central California all the way up through Washington State. It's kind of a dream of mine to find a small town with charm, ocean, trees, hills to settle down in and I came across a little beach town called Gualala on the Sonoma/Mendocino border. It seemed to have everything I was looking for and I wanted to go see it.....someday.
While exploring the town on the internet I came across their art center, which looked beautiful and tucked in the redwoods, and I discovered that they were having an art show at the end of summer. I thought it would be a perfect excuse to take a trip with Bluebell (my vintage 16' 1966 Aloha trailer) and camp at Gualala River Redwood Park (which was beautiful) and show my art at the two day event. The event did not disappoint as far as a colorful array of locals, mostly hippies, and amazing artisan crafts, jewelry, textiles, pottery. And even though everyone was friendly and welcoming to this So Cal girl, I didn't sell anything because tropical surf art is not their vibe.
The drive was beautiful and super scary at certain points as I wound up Hwy 1, my little trailer swinging in the back, up and down narrow winding roads with sheer cliffs. I would love to go again (but not to show artwork) and explore more of the coastline further up north.
